Rainbow – Best of South FD

On this tour we take you through the banana plantations in the southwest part of the island, we cross a forest of exotic trees, we visit a lighthouse from the beginning of the 20th century, and we pass by one of the oldest rum factories.
This excursion begins with a stop in the village of Ponta do Sol. Here we invite you to take a short walk to the island’s old port. This structure was essential for the transport of people and goods before the industrial revolution.
We continue with a climb through banana plantations and eucalyptus forests to the Paul da Serra plateau. This flat area, which appears arid and sterile, is essential for retaining rainwater, which slowly feeds the aquifers and in turn the abundant springs and fountains on the northern slope of the island.
The descent is along a mountain ridge that allows you to witness the different shades of green between the northern and southern slopes. At a certain point, the tarmac road gives way to a dirt and stone road that takes you down to the most western point: Ponta do Pargo and its lighthouse.
We continue down to sea level along an old road made of curves and tunnels carved into the rock. Throughout this part of the adventure, always have your camera to hand, as the landscape is breathtaking, to say the least.
The longest stop of the day is in the village of Paul do Mar. Here you can sample some local delicacies, such as limpets, octopus and swordfish.
The return to Funchal will be made with a stop at the Calheta Rum factory. Here you can learn a little about the island’s history and sample rums, as well as the best biscuits and honey cake on the island.
The return to Funchal will round of the day with picturesque coastal views.
