Extra Information ÉVORA Évora is the capital of the central-southern region of Portugal, the Alentejo. In the city’s historic center stands the ancient Roman Temple of Évora (also known as the Temple of Diana). Nearby, white houses surround Évora Cathedral, a massive Gothic structure dating back to the 12th century. The Igreja de São Francisco features both Gothic and Baroque architecture, along with the Capela dos Ossos, decorated with bones. MONSARAZ Monsaraz, the airy medieval town of Monsaraz, retains its ancient magic like few other places in the world. Made of limestone and schist, this place whispers to us, amid the echo of our steps in its streets, magnificent stories of bold kings, Templar knights, brave people, and ladies of simple beauty. ALQUEVA LAKE It is one of the largest artificial lakes in Europe, built on the Guadiana River. It has a water basin of 250 km2 and covers five municipalities in Alentejo, with many points of interest. On the right bank, you’ll find the castles of Juromenha, Alandroal, Terena, Monsaraz, and Portel, and on the left bank, Mourão and Moura are privileged panoramic points over this body of water.
