This is the best itinerary to see all the most emblematic points in the centre of Lisbon, from the Old Centre, where the Phoenicians, Romans and Moors lived, to the aristocratic area of Chiado and the bohemian Bairro Alto, the result of the growth of the metropolis after the golden age of the Discoveries. We remember the earthquake of 1755 in the magnificent Praça do Comércio, and from there we climb the cobbled streets from the Sé Cathedral to the viewpoints of Santa Luzia and Portas do Sol, past the Roman Theatre and the Church of Santo António, patron saint of weddings. Through narrow and tortuous streets, we climb up to the working-class neighbourhood of Graça. There, from the highest point, with the city at your feet, say hello to Senhora do Monte and São Jorge Castle, before passing by the São Vicente de Fora Convent and the National Pantheon. In Alfama, you can learn to sing a fado as you explore the narrow streets of the city’s oldest and most picturesque quarter. You will be enchanted. The Fado Museum is just around the corner, but there’s no time to lose, so let’s make our way to the downtown, then up to Chiado and Bairro Alto, with its ladies and gentlemen, writers, artists and bohemians. Shopping is for later, but there’s still time to visit the Convent of Carmo and the square where the Carnation Revolution of April 1974 took place, as well as the views from the São Pedro de Alcântara viewpoint.
