Founded by the Romans in 16 BC and known as “Bracara Augusta” in honor of Emperor Augustus, Braga boasts an incomparable historical legacy, visible in its monuments and churches.

Braga Cathedral, for example, is an unmissable landmark, displaying various architectural styles, from Romanesque to Baroque. The city is also proud of its splendid houses, particularly from the 18th century.

More than history, Braga offers a vast cultural heritage. The Sanktuarium Bom Jesus do Monte, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the city’s ex-libris and one of its main attractions.

Since 2017, Braga has also been part of the UNESCO Creative Cities network. In 2021, it was voted Best European Destination of the Year, after coming second in 2019.
