Perched high above the city, Leiria Castle holds a commanding presence with its imposing walls that shelter traces of its diverse history—from a military fortress to a royal palace. The castle’s extraordinary and strategic location was once inhabited by the Romans.

In 1135, Portugal’s first king, Afonso Henriques, built this castle to defend the southern borders of his kingdom, as Santarém and Lisbon were still under Arab rule at the time.
